Alternatives to anatrim and diet pills for weight loss
I bet you don't know anyone who's made it to the top through a get rich quick scheme and I bet you don't know anyone who's lost weight, and kept it off, simply by taking a pill.
As an overweight adult I understand the desire to shed those excess pounds quickly and with as little effort as possible. After all, it didn't take much work to put the weight on - it was fun.
But losing weight and avoiding the yo-yo effect of gaining and losing requires a whole lifestyle change. It requires effort. And it requires smart choices. Unfortunately, none of these are available in a pill.
And while a pill might seem like a quick, easy way to drop weight, consider that many of these have been known to cause side effects such as:
- High blood pressure
- Irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Headaches
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- Depression
In addition, those pills that claim to block fat can cause diarrhea and uncontrollable bowel movements.
And there's not a thing in that list that'll make you look more attractive.
If you're serious about looking AND feeling better, for the long term, you need to look at the alternatives to the quick fix.
Exercise
Now, if you're like me, the very sight of that word makes you tense up, but hear me out. I'm not suggesting that you head out and sign up for a triathlon or even a 5k. What I am suggesting is that you get moving on a regular basis and for a certain amount of time. Taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes four times a week is enough to get your heart rate up, which burns calories. And physical activity will not only make you look better, make you feel better too. When you exercise the body releases endorphins, a natural compound that creates a sense of well being.
Diet
Again, when you see this word, you probably get visions of endless salads, carrot sticks, water and a constant hunger. But diet is as much about what you do eat as what you don't. And, rather than depriving yourself of food, it's about making smarter choices about what you do eat. You'd be hard pressed to find a doctor who thinks starving yourself is a good idea, because like diet pills, that comes with a whole host of problems.
Psychology
Many people who deal with weight issues on a continuing basis might not be aware that their problem might be as much mental as physical. Some people use food as a pick-me-up when they're feeling blue, and if the blue feelings are chronic, it's easy to pack on the pounds. Finding a good counselor to talk to might help to shed some light on why we eat the way we do.
Groups
Finally, no one should struggle with weight loss alone. Getting into a group with others who share your desire to shed pounds is a great way to stay motivated to meet your weight loss goals.
As with anything worthwhile, losing weight and keeping it off takes effort on your part. It's better to learn how to take the weight off by making changes in your lifestyle than by taking a pill, because while a pill can be taken off the market, the knowledge you'll gain by adopting an alternative will last a lifetime.
